In steel casting, for example, molten metal contracts as it cools and solidifies. Metal reserved in the riser must remain fluid long enough to feed this shrinkage.
An insulating riser sleeve slows heat loss and delays solidification within the riser. The hollow spherical structure and insulating properties of cenospheres make them a raw material to consider for these formulations.
Cenospheres act as aggregate within a sleeve wall made with binders and other ingredients. Actual insulation and feeding performance depend on the complete formulation, forming conditions, sleeve geometry and casting process.
